Methuen Public Schools announced that Tim Jaroche, a teacher at the Methuen Adult Learning Center, has been recognized for his work in adult math instruction after being chosen as a special guest contributor for the System for Adult Basic Education Support (SABES) Mathematics and Adult Numeracy Curriculum and Instruction Professional Development Team.

Jaroche wrote a blog post titled "Letting Students Take the Lead," which was published by SABES on Sept. 30. The post describes how his approach to teaching mathematics evolved through classroom experience and professional development with SABES math coaches, giving adult learners a greater role in their own education. The SABES math team highlighted the contribution as a resource for adult education students and staff.

Supervisor of Adult Education Carolyn McHugh said in the release, "Tim's commitment to learning and growing as an educator is a wonderful reflection of the dedication we see throughout the Methuen Adult Learning Center. He has taken on the challenge of strengthening his instruction because he understands how important it is to meet adult learners where they are and help them build the confidence and skills they need to achieve their goals."

Jaroche teaches Adult Basic Education, Adult Secondary Education and English for Speakers of Other Languages at the center. Over the past two years, he has participated in the SABES Math Academy and additional professional development, including Saturday sessions.

The Methuen Adult Learning Center provides free educational programming funded by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Methuen Public Schools and the City of Methuen. It serves nearly 200 students annually, many of whom are parents, grandparents, caregivers or relatives of Methuen Public Schools students. The center offers morning and evening classes through in-person, hybrid and remote formats, along with field trips, guest speaker programs and community partnerships, including recent visits to the Massachusetts State House.
